What The AI Says · Local and consumer services

When someone asks AI who to call, is your business in the answer?

A blocked drain, a toothache, a wedding in eight weeks: these were Google searches, and increasingly they are AI questions. The assistant answers with two or three trusted names. The customer calls one of them.

Transcript · what a customer sees

Who is a reliable emergency plumber on the north side?

Based on local reviews, three companies come up consistently: Copperdale Plumbing, Blue Anchor Mechanical and Harbourline Home Services. Copperdale is frequently mentioned for fast callouts and clear pricing...

Names invented for the example. The pattern is real: fit the question, miss the answer, and the customer never knew you existed.

Where the answers come from

What the engines read before they name anyone

When an engine answers a who-should-I-call question, it reads sources it trusts. For local services that usually means:

  • Review platforms, and specifically the ones the engines cite for your trade, which is knowable, not guesswork.
  • Your Google Business Profile: services, hours, service area, photos, and responses to reviews.
  • Trade directories and local business listings, kept consistent to the letter.
  • Community forums, neighbourhood groups and Reddit. Grok also reads activity on X.

Our scan shows which of these your local engines actually read for your category, and the monthly work gets you present there.

Common questions

Do people really ask AI for a plumber or a dentist?
47% of US adults used AI to find a local business in the past month, and adoption is accelerating rather than plateauing. The habit is strongest in exactly the moments service businesses live on: urgent, specific, high-intent questions.
I already rank well on Google. Am I covered?
Partly, and it matters: 62% of people verify an AI recommendation on Google afterwards. But ranking in a list of links and being one of the three names an assistant speaks are different contests, read from different signals. A July 2026 tracking study of plumbing and HVAC queries across ten US metros found less than 35% overlap between the top Google results and what the AI assistants recommended. The companies AI named shared a different profile: identical business details across 17 or more directories, deep recent reviews, and real community mentions.
Which reviews actually matter?
The ones on platforms the engines cite for your category in your area. Our scan lists those platforms by name. Five recent, specific reviews there beat fifty anywhere else, and we give you the exact ask-your-customer script.
How fast does this move?
Honestly: weeks to months, not days. Engines recrawl on their own schedule. We do the work, then re-measure monthly and show you the movement word for word. When something has not moved yet, the report says so.
